Camp Ondessonk Mattress Replacement Project Initiated Thanks to $10,000 Grant

Camp Mattress Replacement Project Initiated Thanks to $10,000 Grant

By Connie Lanaghan

Sweet dreams for our campers as they lay their bodies on new mattresses, courtesy of a $10,000 lead grant in 2011 from the Virginia Wellington Cabot Foundation.  Our mattress replacement project is part of an ongoing effort to enhance our campers’ outdoor experience by replacing all 376 camper mattresses by summer, 2014.  Special thanks to the Virginia Wellington Cabot Foundation for funding this important project and to former Executive Director Tim Eiserle and his wife Robin Wellington for sponsoring our project proposal.  The foundation’s lead grant allowed us to replace 100 mattresses and refurbish another 150 with new covers last summer.  Our goal is to replace another 80 – 100 this summer.  Each $75 gift gets us one mattress closer to our goal.  Your support in this project will be greatly appreciated by our campers.

Camp Ondessonk New Counselor in Training Program

New Counselor in Training Program

By Rusty Parker

Since its inception, Camp Ondessonk’s CIT Program has successfully developed generations of Ondessonk staff members, and this summer marks the unveiling of an exciting new look to the program. Designed to fulfill the mission of instilling and cultivating qualities of integrity, compassion, hard work, and selflessness in emerging lifetime leaders, Camp’s new CIT Program will take on a slightly different structure consisting of a guaranteed full two weeks of programming for all CITs, with a third week being offered to a small number of CITs who will be selectively invited back based on performance. While the first week of the previous program was devoted to training within a specific activity area, the first week of the new program will instead engage CITs in creative programming designed to contribute to their leadership development through the cultivation of those qualities most necessary for strong leadership and effective camp counseling. Having developed in these capacities throughout the first week, and having received an orientation to their assigned activity area at the end of the first week, it is our hope that CITs will be better prepared for successful participation in their activity area training during week two. The second week, then, will offer CITs the opportunity to learn the hard skills and teaching techniques of a particular activity, and CITs will be tested and evaluated on their performance. While most of the CITs in a given session will complete their program at the end of this second week, a handful of select CITs will be offered the opportunity to closely shadow a Unit Leader in a bonus third week, which will allow those select CITs to live in a unit and be trained in the activities and responsibilities of a unit counselor. While the CIT Program at Camp Ondessonk has always been one of Camp’s most successful and popular programs, we are excited about the new additions to the program and feel strongly that these additions will contribute meaningfully not only to the development of future staff members, but also to the development of future leaders. The CIT program staff can’t wait to implement this new program and are looking forward to working with another outstanding group of CITs this summer. Heepwah!

Camp Ondessonk Lodge Updates

Lodge Updates

By Tim Coffey

Camp Ondessonk Lodge

Camp Ondessonk Lodge

Between making some additions to the way Fall Lodge Reunion is run, inducting almost 200 new members, raising several hundred dollars for Ondessonk and the Campership Fund, spreading awareness among many communities, and performing service at Camp, the Lodges of Ondessonk and Tekakwitha have had a very eventful year. Last summer, with the help of many summer staff and volunteers, we were able to induct nearly 200 new members. These new members have already been an awesome addition to Lodge and its mission. Tri-State Lodge Tribe recently spent an entire weekend working at Camp, performing necessary cabin maintenance and working on the ongoing project of reopening Fat Man’s Misery. The Metro East, Springfield, Clinton County, and Tri-State Lodge Tribes have all hosted “Fun Nights” at churches and schools in their areas. These events garner interest in Ondessonk, raise significant funds for Camp and the Campership Fund, and are an awesome time for those in attendance. Be sure to keep an eye out for an Ondessonk Fun Night in your area during the next school year! Attendees of this fall’s Lodge Reunion observed some changes from those Reunions in the past. They gained valuable knowledge and skills through seminars offered up by Ondessonk staff and even a professional storyteller. And of course, there were all of the best parts of Lodge Reunion: reconnecting with friends, performing service, electing officials, and hiking.    Lodge has done and continues to do great work for communities and Camp Ondessonk. If you are a Lodge Member, please consider being a part of this service by re-activating and becoming an active part of your Lodge Tribe. For more information about Lodge and becoming active, email lodge@ondessonk.com or call 618-695-2489.

Camp Ondessonk Quarter Auction Nets $3200 for the Campership Fund

Camp O Quarter Auction Nets $3200 for the Campership Fund

By Connie Lanaghan

Bid paddles were waving and quarters were “cha-chinging” as 110 Camp Friends gathered for the 1st Annual Camp O Quarter Auction, held on February 19th, 2012 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Highland, Illinois. Twenty-four area vendors set up their wares for a pre-auction shopping party, and they graciously donated more than 140 items for the silent auction, attendance prizes and the main event.

“I think we had a good turnout, and we met our goal for our first year,” said Camp board member Cindy Knebel, who coordinated the event with fellow board member Lynn Fuhler.  “About 80% of the attendees won some sort of prize and everyone had fun.”

Quarter Auctions are the newest craze in fundraising events, and are growing in popularity in the St. Louis area. A cross between an auction and a bingo, bidders place quarters on the items they want to bid on and raise their paddle number, and the winner is chosen by a drawing.

Big Heepwahs to Cindy Knebel and Lynn Fuhler for spearheading the event, to all the participating vendors, and the Lodge and Camper volunteers who worked at the event!

Interview with Brian Croft- New Program Director

Brian Croft- Camp Ondessonk Program Director

Brian Croft- Camp Ondessonk Program Director

What were the first three things you did when you arrived at Camp Ondessonk?

Took my wife on a hike around the grounds, it was really pretty outside and I really was putting off unpacking.

Went and saw Clyde the Donkey.  Clyde was a big reason I took this job, and I wanted to spend some time with him.

Got lost… Tried to find Pakentuck, I found it, but then had a little issue finding my way back.

If you were a Superhero, which one would you be and why?

I was always a big fan of the hulk.  You know everyone in the camp world is trying to “go green”, I just figure he takes that to the next level.

What are you most excited about for this summer?

I have been training my whole life for the professional gaga circuit.  I think that camp will help me reach my goal!  Some people have called me the Chuck Norris of Gaga!

What was the most interesting trip you have ever taken? Why?

When I was 14, my grandfather had just passed away.  We flew down to Corpus Christi, Texas, where he lived, and visited with my step-grandmother.  When we left, we drove his truck and camper back to Illinois.  There were four of us, and it was a single bed cab.  22 hours…. Awful!

What was your first unexpected moment after arriving at Camp?

Ozark General Store Bacon Cheddar Ranch Fries… So good and so close!  The program staff took me there my first day, I’m addicted.

Favorite meal?

Anything Rachelle cooks.  My goal for the summer is to not end up looking like Jabba the hut, but with Rachelle in the kitchen, it’s not looking good.  Her Biscuits and Gravy for breakfast can make anyone a morning person.

What is your favorite part of your job?

Being a part of this amazing family.  The Ondessonk family spans more than half a century and to be a part of it all it truly amazing.  I can honestly say that I have landed my dream job.

Favorite movie?

The godfather… I know it’s cliché, but I can’t help it.

What is your favorite tradition from childhood, that you would love to pass on?

Every summer for the past 60 years, my family has been going to Black River Lodge in Lesterville, Missouri.  We go the same week every year.  It’s where I proposed to my wife, and I hope one day to bring our kids there,  (after they go to summer camp of course)

If you were a tree (or animal) what kind of tree (animal) would you be? Why?

Clyde the donkey…. Smart, sophisticated, handsome, he’s got it all!

If you were a Star Wars®  character, which one would it be? Why?

I would say Chewbaca, but Jeremy is the hairy one, so I am going to probably be an Ewok.  Cute but dangerous…

What is your favorite drink? Why?

Coffee… People always ask how I stay so hyper during camp, it’s no secret, I am never far removed from my coffee.  Yes I probably have a whole in my stomach the size of Rhode Island, but hey, that’s what I am willing to sacrifice to camp!

What would I find in your refrigerator right now?

Leftovers, I decided it was time to do the annual defrost the freezer and eat everything in it in a short amount of time!

What is the last book you read? Give a plot summary.

I would like to say that it was some thought provoking book about nature by John Muir, but it was the hunger games.  Plot summary… don’t want to ruin the movie!

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional. with whom would it be?

I would love to trade places with my dogs, riley and charity.  I don’t know what it is about them, but they always seem so happy.  I wonder what their thinking about?

What was the last movie you went to see?

The last movie I went to see…. Hmmm, I guess it would have been the Hunger games.  I went with program staff, it was amazing.

What is your favorite movie (song)?

Favorite song – Rise and Shine, I haven’t lived it yet, but I’ve watched youtube videos of campers belting it!  I am excited to witness it first hand.

Aliens land in front of you, and request that you return with them to their planet in exchange for anything you desire, and the ability to hold any position in their society. Which desire and position would you choose?

My desire would be an unlimited supply of bacon.  And the position…. Professional Gaga player!

If you could be any character in fiction, whom would you be?

No question, either Harry Potter or Han Solo.  They are so much alike that it’s hard to choose.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see cast as you in the lead role?

Mike Jennings, I know he’s not a Hollywood celebrity, but I think he would be an amazing actor.

What is something that not a lot of people know about you, but you WISH more people COULD know?

Hard question, I’m kind of an open book.  Let’s see… I would have to say my gaga skills.  I know that a lot of people think that after the age of 23, your gaga skills go down.  I disagree, I think I am in my gaga prime and am ready to dominate the octagon!

Interview with Jeremy Culpepper- New Camping Services Director

What were the first three things you did when you arrived at Camp Ondessonk?

  1. Wondered if I had made the correct turn (after driving for a couple minutes down the camp road)
  2. Looked up into the clear, night sky, amazed at how many stars I could see
  3. Went to sleep in the room that I was staying in at St. Noel (I had the choice of about 10 beds to sleep in, and of course, chose a top bunk!)

If you were a Superhero, which one would you be and why?

Wolverine – I can take some pretty nasty “hits”, but still somehow manage to move forward.

What are you most excited about for this summer?

Working with a staff and volunteer base of over 150 individuals.

What was the most interesting trip you have ever taken? Why?

My 8th grade class trip to Washington DC. For $120 (which I was able to raise selling candy bars), I was able to see most of the infamous landmarks in DC, along with guided tours of the White House, Capital Building, and Ford’s Theater. In addition, that $120 also covered all of my meals and a trip to Gettysburg on our return trip home.  Not to mention hotel rooms for 2 nights.  I need to find the teacher (Mrs. Wilson) who put together that “package” so that I could take my family on such a trip someday.

What was your first unexpected moment after arriving at Camp?

I was blown away by how beautiful Southern Illinois is! Natural beauty around every turn.

Favorite meal?

My grandma’s Goulash and my wife’s Chicken That Makes Its Own Gravy, are in a head-to-head tie.

What is your favorite part of your job?

So far, my favorite part of the job has been talking to each of the 200+ summer staff applicants on the phone. I learned more about Camp Ondessonk in a 2-week period, than I think I could have working here for an entire year. I loved the camp stories each of them had to tell, along with the one unique thing about Camp Ondessonk that they each felt I should look most forward to this upcoming summer (that happened to be one of my interview questions).

Favorite movie?

Fletch (gotta love Chevy Chase)

What is your favorite tradition from childhood, that you would love to pass on?

My family used to play a friendly game of snow football on Thanksgiving. There weren’t many times like that, when the family was together and having that kind of fun. I would love to get that going again with my children and the children of my siblings……….which would have to be in about 4-5 years, as all of them are 3 years old or younger.

If you were a tree (or animal) what kind of tree (animal) would you be? Why?

A Koala Bear (but because it is the animal I think I am an opposite to- instead of looking cute and cuddly, with a ferocious attitude, I look ferocious, with a cute and cuddly attitude)  J

If you were a Star Wars®  character, which one would it be? Why?

Probably one of the Ewoks, because like them, no one has any idea what it is that I am.  J

What is your favorite drink? Why?

Raspberry Iced Tea. It’s not quite water, and it’s not quite soda.

What would I find in your refrigerator right now?

Leftovers from Easter Dinner, some Eggs from the Camp Chickens, and a bottle of Diet Coke that has been in there since our move on February 18th (we don’t drink Diet Coke, so it will probably remain in the refrigerator until it turns to syrup and we will be forced to get rid of it.)

What is the last book you read? Give a plot summary.

Social Psychology………this was a text book. I find myself re-reading textbooks and taking notes, even though I am no longer a college student.

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional. with whom would it be?

My son…… just so I could see what is going on inside his little head.

What was the last movie you went to see?

I think it was The Tourist (Johnny Depp)

What is your favorite movie (song)?

Holiday Road (National Lampoons Vacation Movies)

Aliens land in front of you, and request that you return with them to their planet in exchange for anything you desire, and the ability to hold any position in their society. Which desire and position would you choose?

Desire- Bring my family with me      Position- Intergalactic Ambassador

If you could be any character in fiction, whom would you be?

Sherlock Holmes

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see cast as you in the lead role?

Adam Sandler

What is something that not a lot of people know about you, but you WISH more people COULD know?

I was a successful, non-traditional college student (started at age 23; graduated with a B.S. and M.Ed.). I wish more people realized that it can be done and that deciding to work or travel immediately following high school is OK. Image

Camp Ondessonk Testimonials

Carol K-  Belleville IL:  2/10/2012

Camp Ondessonk has been my home away from home for over 40 years.  I go back at least once a year to enjoy the beauty that the Shawnee Forest has to offer. The many friends that I have made there are like family to me.  At camp, it is not important if you are rich or poor, black or white, fat or skinny, male or female–everyone is treated with courtesy and respect.  Camp is fun–you wont miss your cell phone, tv, video games, or even your soft, cushy, air conditioned room–why?  Because you are having the time of your life.  If given the opportunity– go to Camp Ondessonk…you will never know what you missed, if you don’t.  HEEPWAH!

Sara C  Nashville IL:

I learned about Camp Ondessonk when I was 10. My parents weren’t so sure about sending me to a rustic place three hours away at that age, with three-sided cabins and caves as living units. But once my whole family got there, met the amazing role models I had, and saw the self-confidence I’d gained after just a week, they let me come back every year – followed by both of my sisters, and all of my family at Family Camp. That first year was 1990. Twenty-two years later, I can honestly say that Camp Ondessonk has been one of the most formative experiences in my life. I learned how to break out of my shyness. I learned how to roll my own sleeping bag, walk a trail by moonlight, pee in the woods without getting my shoes wet. Sure, there were spiders, there was some homesickness and there were some tears. But I lived through it, I got over it, and I came back, summer after summer. I learned that who I am is someone of value and talent, just the way I am. I learned how to build a fire big enough to cook 60 burgers, and light it with one match. I learned how to connect with God in a whole different way than just during Mass. As a staff member, I learned I can lead, and do it with kindness and humor and still get the job done. I’ve climbed in my career thanks to the people skills and life skills I learned at Camp Ondessonk. I made the best friends I will ever know – including my husband. Every kid needs Camp Ondessonk. It’s one of the purely happiest, most positive places on earth.

Cyndi J.- Metropolis IL:

I attended Camp O in the late 70′s as a camper and continued on staff in the 80′s. I made lifelong friends who I still communicate to this day. I met my BFF at camp when I was 16. Camp taught me social values and gave me a great appreciation for nature. I would highly recommend this great institution to anyone wanting the full camping experience. Besides a week or two of fun, your children will take away a lifetime of memories.

Cate L- Chicago IL:

To me, Camp Ondessonk is a home away from home.
‘Camp O’ is an amazing environment where you are accepted for who you are as a person, not for your looks or the new shoes you have. It may seem scary, going to a new place for a whole week, not knowing what to expect, or if you’ll make friends, but the counselors and campers at Ondessonk are so genuine and friendly, I cry every time I have to LEAVE camp. Additionally, at Ondessonk, there is something for everyone. From horsebackriding, to making crafts, to shooting arrows and guns in Target Sports, learning about Catholic martyrs in Council, to hiking in the Shawnee National Forest, to Boating and Swimming, Camp O has it all. Not only are there activities in the day, but many fun night activities, like a Unit Campfire, Tuesday Night Game, Overnight (sleep out in the wilderness and eat Camp’s famous foil burgers!), the Lodge Ceremony, and Friday Night Skits. I can 100%, undoubtedly guarantee that Camp Ondessonk is the perfect place for you to go to or to send your child to over summer vacation. Last but certainly not least, Camp is the place where some of my best memories were made, ever since I was 10 years old. Meaning all things good, Camp Ondessonk is not only 5 stars, but a big HEEPWAH!

Rachel B- St Louis MO:

Camp Ondessonk was the first place I learned that life was much larger than the hometown where I grew up.  No matter the size of their town/school/church, it’s easy for young people to get labeled in a certain way and not realize there are other qualities to be brought out of them.  Camp definitely fosters this development.  Something about entering those gates allows you to check all judgments and inhibitions at the door and for one week, teens and pre-teens learn the valuable lesson of acceptance.

Beyond that, how often do you get to be so close to nature?? The living units are incredible – where else do you have the opportunity to live in a tree house or cave?  The camp schedule walks that perfect line of staying engaged while getting to thoroughly explore and experience all that camp has to offer.

Camp Ondessonk does a great job of representing its “Catholic Youth Camp” mission with an inviting platform for all denominations/traditions.  The Mass celebrated on Sunday evening brings a heightened appreciation to practicing Catholics, and the liturgy itself (songs, message etc.) is a great experience for someone who has never attended Mass before.  Spirituality is infused in the week not through bible verses and memorized prayer (although these are welcome formats) but through a true awe for the Creator and the world so magnificently fashioned.

In shaping my worldview, I credit Camp Ondessonk second only to my family.  The friendships ignited during Ondessonk summers have withstood distance and time to be the most lasting and returnable (you know what I mean – the friendship you can go back to after a decade without even a second of small talk) relationships.

I really thought, when I walked across the covered bridge as a 5th grader, that I was just going to camp for a week.  I had no idea that camp would be going with me for a lifetime.

Jaime C- Oceanside CA:

Some of the best memories of my childhood were made here. I learned so much here, not just about living in the outdoors, but also about who I am. I’m 32 years old now, but I would still go to camp every summer if I could. You can bet I will be sending my children to Camp O someday. Heepwah!

Ana M- Festus MO:

I started going to Camp Ondessonk the summer after I turned 10 and have been going every summer since. Everything about camp is amazing! When I’m at Camp O I can be me and just have fun. Because of camp I am more confident in everything I do. Take it from a camper, Camp is a life-changing experience!

Allison S- Belleville IL:

I have to start by saying how beautiful this area is! I sent my 13 year old to camp last summer (all girls week) She had the time of her life! It was really good for her to get away from teenage stresses and technology! The staff and counselors are so caring I felt very comfortable leaving! I have to say not only was this a great rewarding and learning experience for my daughter but It taught me a few life lessons as well! In the words of my daughter “HEEPWAH”

J.T.- New Lenox IL:

Camp Ondessonk is a great place to send your kids for a wonderful and safe camp experience.  Activities include, hikes, horseback riding, swimming, handicrafts, archery, and outdoor overnights. Campers stay in units which are three wall rustic cabins. Kids are under the supervision of trained and background checked camp counselors. The camp director Dan King is professional and kind and was happy to answer all my questions and concerns.  King, was a camper when he was a kid and now runs the place! My child had a great time and wants to go back next year. He made made many friends.  If you want to know more check out the website.

Southern Illinois camp’s tech-savvy fans use Facebook, Twitter to recreate a week of summer camp online

OZARK, IL – (Feb. 2, 2012) – Swimming, boating, eating s’mores; the lovers of Illinois’ Camp Ondessonk will get a chance to relive their summer camp experience starting this Sunday. But they won’t be roughing it in the woods of southern Illinois – this camp will all take place online.

More than 200 “campers” from all across the U.S. will participate in a week of digital summer camp through Facebook and Twitter. The entire program, called Ondessonk Online, will take place within the capabilities of the social media channels Facebook and Twitter, but will mirror the organization’s normal summer camp schedule. Menus will be tweeted out, sing-alongs will take place in Facebook status comments repeat-after-me style, and there will be friendly competitions like the virtual tug-of-war that involves getting people to vote for your cabin’s name.

The program used social media to reach out to former campers, playing on the nostalgia and camp spirit many expressed in keeping up with the camp from spots across the globe. With a full 53 years of camper, staff and volunteer alumni, there are “Ondessonkers” everywhere, and this program aims to raise awareness online in the hopes of allowing former campers to reconnect with the organization. While Camp Ondessonk’s facilities continue to improve, much remains the same since 1959. Ondessonk campers still sleep under the stars on Wednesday nights, they live in wonderfully rustic open-air cabins, and they still hear the calls of whippoorwills at night. It is truly a last frontier – a place where living in the outdoors can be enjoyed to the fullest.

“It’s amazing how many former campers and staff have kept in touch with the people they went to camp with, many of them staying in touch for several decades,” said Executive Director Dan King. “It seemed like a natural use of social media to give people a chance to relive the experience, no matter where they live or how long ago they went to camp.”

Camp Ondessonk promoted the program solely through their Facebook wall and an email newsletter. Campers registered through a Facebook tab where they could elect to choose their cabin preference, and request friends to “stay” with. Campers could also opt to help plan a physical, offline meet-up for Wednesday, February 8th. Over 80 campers elected to do so and have planned multiple events throughout the Midwest including a rock climbing field trip at Upper Limits in Bloomington/Normal, a cookout in Tower Grove Park in St. Louis, and a meetup at someone’s house in Springfield, IL.

“We have a few things planned, like a unit spirit contest, roasting mallows, and a scavenger hunt, but mostly it would be an informal party to celebrate how much we love camp,” said Dylan Finnell, host of the Springfield event.

Ondessonk aims to not only provide an engaging program for their current and alumni communities, but also to update fans and friends with current news and encourage them to interact with the brand and with each other in the online space. This program was developed and executed by Elasticity of St. Louis, whose staff includes an active camp alumna, as an in-kind donation.

Since 1959, Camp Ondessonk has provided children and children-at-heart the opportunity to experience first hand the Shawnee National Forest of Southern Illinois. Ondessonk’s summer camp programs provide an experience that encourages campers to have fun, grow spiritually, make friends, grow in self-confidence and self-esteem, and develop values. All of Camp’s programs focus on providing a fun and enriching experience for participants by encouraging them to participate in a wide variety of new and exciting activities. Camp Ondessonk is the Premier Adventure Destination of the Midwest.  Our camper fees are extremely competitive and unlike many other summer camps, Ondessonk does not charge additional fees for horseback riding or senior camper electives.

While the Ondessonk Online campers compete for the coveted “Golden Arrowhead” patch (which has its own Twitter feed), follow along on their Facebook page and with the hashtag #Ondessonk.
